The Messerschmitt Bf 109 was a German fighter aircraft that was the standard fighter aircraft of the Luftwaffe just before the Second World War and during it, together with the Focke-Wulf Fw 190, formed the backbone of the Luftwaffe's fighter force. It was first deployed in 1937 during the Spanish Civil War and was still in service at the time of the introduction of jet aircraft at the end of World War II in 1945.
